Theta brain frequencies are the brain states most strongly connected to dreams, meditative states of consciousness, deep relaxation, and accessing the wisdom and power within our subconscious mind.
During meditation and when drifting off to sleep, our brain activity slows down, calming our bodies and disengaging our conscious mind from our active thoughts and feelings.
Our thinking brain uses Beta waves, and for many of us, getting stuck in Beta frequencies leads to anxiety, poor quality sleep, and an inability to relax.
Our brains work through an electro-chemical energy system in which small electric currents pass between neurons, the nerve cells of the brain. Brain researchers measure these electrical patterns using the science of electroencephalography and EEG machines, which measure the electrical activity in the brain through electrodes placed on a person’s head.
Theta states are one of about five well-researched frequencies observed in the human brain, which also includes Alpha, Beta, Delta and Gamma waves. Each of these brainwave types has its specific range of frequencies and amplitudes, creating the activity in our minds and nervous systems. Ultimately, all our thoughts and feelings emerge from this electrical activity in our brain.
Theta waves oscillate in the frequency range of 3 to 8 Hertz, or cycles per second, one notch lower than the range of Alpha waves and one notch higher in frequency than the deep-sleep range of Delta waves.
Here is another example of when Theta waves naturally occur: Have you ever been driving in a stress-free situation and suddenly realize you have lost track of your sense of time, and you don’t recall the last stretch of the highway?
If so, you have encountered the Theta mental state when your conscious mind is still in control, Research into Theta brain waves reveals the following positive outcomes:
Improved positive thinking
Super-learning and improving memory recall
Rejuvenating relaxation
Deep and satisfying sleep
More profound and effective meditation practice
Increased creativity and mental performance
Lowering of anxiety and depression and improving overall mental health
Enhanced spiritual awakening
You can listen to several Theta wave sounds on YouTube. Here’s one example. Relaxing Theta Waves (15 min) - Binaural Beats - Slow Down Your Brainwaves - YouTube
